Saline Formula For Neti Pot
There are several varieties of saline formula for use in Neti Pots. There are essentially two types that one must familiarize themselves with.
- Isotonic -- This means that the saline concentration is mixed so as to match the body's own concentration.
- Hypertonic -- This means the saline content is stronger than the body's own content.
Isotonic mixtures are recommended for beginners. In this case the salt content should not cause discomfort for the user. It is also common to find isotonic formulas that have
Sodium Bicarbonate added to adjust the pH of the solution.
Hypertonic formulas have more salt and therefore can cause discomfort for the user. This isn't to say that these can't be used, but it is advised that these mixtures be left for those that
are experienced in using the neti pot. These mixtures will generally cause an increased mucus flow and helps to give the user a more thorough flush.
Pre-Packaged Neti Pot Salt
Some new Neti Pots will come with pre-packaged salt packages that are pre-measured for use with that particular Nostril Pot. Most of these packages will be Isotonic formulas and there will usually be
refill packages available. These packages are ideal for beginners as all one has to do is pour the packet in the neti pot and add warm water to dissolve the salt. These are especially easy to travel with as you are not carrying a bulk container of salt.
Bulk Neti Pot Salt
Neti pot salt is also available in bulk containers. These can range from simple plastic bags to plastic jars full of the formula.
Bulk neti pot salt can be ideal if you have the option of storing the salt near the area you will be using the neti pot. With bulk salt one must measure the salt as it is added to the neti pot.
If the user desires a stronger formula then simply add more salt. Traveling with bulk salt containers can be more difficult. It is advisable to place the salt into a small container that will hold just enough salt for your trip.
Nasal Rinse Additives
Advanced neti pot users have the option to purchase nasal rinse additives. These products have been developed as additives for the neti pot formula. There are several varieties of these products available and the user is advised to shop around and
experiment with these to see what works for them. None of these additives should be used until one is familiar with the neti pot. Some of these additives will cause discomfort as they contain capsaicin (The hot ingredient in Pepper).
These pepper based rinses will help create large amounts of mucus to help flush out the sinuses. The associated discomfort is a potential problem for beginners.
